There are destinations that, in the minds of most people, are «summer» or «winter» or «spring». And sometimes the experience of breaking these molds, and traveling to winter destinations in the summer and vice versa, is fascinating. Crete is one of those cases — and the experience becomes even more exciting if you consider that its spring is almost summer, its days are sunny, its towns are the perfect city break and the hinterland is ideal for hiking in flowery landscapes.
Chania and its Venetian port
Cobbled alleys, Venetian mansions, pastel colors that alternate with each other, magical sunsets behind the lighthouse symbol of the town. This is just the beginning. Chania, one of the most beautiful towns in Greece, combines romance with sightseeing, overnight stays in hip bars, stunning Cretan cuisine served in sunny courtyards and all-day walks in atmospheric neighborhoods full of history. Not that summer does not suit them, but spring is a perfect time to explore them in their grandeur, without the crowds of August and with the excitement created by the first rays of the sun.
Rethymno and its Old Town
Another wonderful old town, more low profile but equally atmospheric and colorful, also set with its Venetian port, and a castle of 1575 taken from the fairy tales of our childhood. Rethymno may be famous for its beaches, but it is also a beautiful city break. After you are satisfied with walks in cobbled streets, you will be satisfied with the flavors of authentic Cretan cuisine, you will sleep in restored Venetian mansions and you will be spoiled with nights spent in Cretan raki. Not bad at all, that is.
Knossos not Overflowing with Crowds
How ancient (do you think) is the most ancient thing you have ever seen? Knossos, restored and with some inaccuracies, wonderful in its grandeur, breaks all records and counts three and a half thousand years of life — which means that it was ancient even for the ancient Greeks, such as Pericles or Thucydides. Free from the summer crowds, the spectacular palace of King Minos awaits us for a super atmospheric time.
Taking your first Dips of the Year
On the one hand, we have the sunshine, on the other hand, the ideal location of Crete, which guarantees that as long as you do not climb the mountains you live an almost eternal summer. This is all you need to start your first sea trip in May. In the turquoise waters of Elafonissi, in the deep blue of the Libyan Sea in Preveli and Triopetra, in the exotic Kedrodasos, and the wonderful Falassarna, it can only be summer.

The mythical gorge of Samaria will assume that it does not need recommendations but it is not the only amazing route you can do in nature. The route of the European path E4 passes through traditional settlements and next to monasteries, and goes up and down the mountains of Crete.

Meet the Minoan Civilization & Ancient Greek Music
Start your day visiting the most important archaeological site on Crete, the Minoan palace of Knossos, the mythical Labyrinth of Homer. You will be visiting an amazing area of 22.000sq meters. A prehistoric “city”, the place where the oldest European civilization started and flourished some 5000 years ago. Your journey into prehistoric times will be completed by visiting the biggest prehistoric collection of artifacts in Greece, the Archaeological Museum of Heraklion. This is where you can see at close range all treasures from all Minoan palaces and other Minoan areas excavated on Crete.
A short walking tour of the old, historic section of the town of Heraklion will follow. You will visit the most important historic monuments from the Venetian and Ottoman period, such as the Venetian Fountain of Morosini, the Basilica of St. Mark, the Venetian Loggia, and the Church of Apostle Titus, the Venetian fortress of “Rocca a Mare” etc. A traditional meal will follow, in one of the town’s most authentic “mezedopolia” local restaurants. In a private studio, you will enjoy an hour and a half workshop on ancient Greek Music, in theory, and practice.
The theory is focusing on the presentation of the ancient Greek music instruments, musical forms, ancient Greek modes and moods, the harmony of the spheres, and the ancient Greek musical notation.
During the experiential part of the workshop, you are becoming a musician! We welcome you to attempt to play yourselves simple ancient music rhythms. Use accurate copies of ancient Greek musical instruments, with the help of your instructor.
Rethymnon for Nature Lovers
Your day will start with a scenic drive to the west of the town of Rethimnon. Your first experience will be the natural lake of Kourna, the only natural freshwater lake in Crete. The lake is reported in antiquity by the name Koresia. It looks like there was an ancient temple in the area dedicated to Athena Koresia. Your next stop will be the beautiful Natural Park of Patsos. In the park, renowned for its natural beauty, feel your senses delighted thanks to the several species of fauna thriving.
You will hike the Gorge of Patsos. Also known as Agios Antonios Gorge, it is an 8kms long moderate hike. Enjoy a delicious traditional meal in the local tavern of the gorge, including typical Cretan specialties. You will visit Arkadi Monastery, a centuries-old Monument, a historic monastery. It is a symbol of independence for the Cretan people. Explore its impressive architecture and decorations. Finally, learn about its history and its significance in the Cretan people’s struggle for liberation.

Explore the Traditional Aspects of Chania
Start your day exploring the rich and turbulent Modern History of Crete. Focusing on the 20th Century and its emblematic figures of it. Visit a traditional village and its Historic and Folk Arts Museum. The exhibits of the Museum are aged from the Roman to the Modern times. Including ancient coins, traditional everyday objects of the Cretan households, weapons, and swords used by the Cretans during their liberation wars.
Just a few kilometers to the east, another traditional village is waiting for you. There, you will explore the impressive Monastery of St. George Karydiou, dating back to the 16th century AD. You will also visit a modern olive oil factory. Find out about olive oil production and experience an olive oil tasting. On your way to Armeni village, where you will have lunch, pass by the beautiful village of Vrises. The village of Vrises is renowned for its Venetian Fountain.
Spinalonga Island
The Island Experience
Drive along the Northeast Coast of Crete towards the areas of Elounda and Plaka. Reaching the traditional village of Plaka, you are taking a small traditional boat and enjoying a short boat trip to the beautiful island of Spinalonga, one of the most important historic sites of Crete.
The island was turned into a fortress in the middle of the 16th century. It constituted one of the best examples of Venetian defensive architecture. From 1903 to 1957 Spinalonga’s impregnable castle was turned into the last European leper colony.
An enjoyable fishing trip around the beautiful natural bay of “kolokitha” from our private traditional boat will follow. Enjoy the snacks, fruits, and drinks on board too!
Lunch in a traditional restaurant in the village of Plaka, overlooking Spinalonga Island. After lunch, you will enjoy the last stop of the day in the traditional village of Kritsa. Renowned for its handmade weaving art, embroideries, and textiles.
